Kyra, a 20-something-year old finding her way in the world, as she travels with her hometown friends - George, Wren, and Bernie - exploring forgotten buildings and uncovering their history. Along their journey, they confront why they left home and face their fears of being left behind, mirroring the buildings they search for.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

I wrote “Abandoned Buildings” when having a feeling of loss of community while returning to my hometown after moving 300 miles away. I had missed interacting with family and friends further than just a screen, and I was worried that too much time had gone by, and we wouldn’t connect like we used to. Thankfully, after a short but awkward transition period, I felt like I had found the part of me when I was home that was lost while pursuing other ventures away.

Kyra faces a similar path to mine, as she tries to reconnect with friends while she still can. Her obstacle is internal as she navigates ways to communicate with them while also grieving the loss of a loved one. It takes a while for Kyra to reconcile, as it does for the rest of the group as well.

After stepping away from directing for over a year, helming a new project felt like I was exploring my own abandoned building. There were many things I relearned while on set, and others that felt like coming home again. Friends I’ve known for a long time worked on this set, while also adding new faces to the team, cultivating a group that has a familiar language with each other and embraces the possibilities of the future.

With this film, I hope that viewers can identify with the characters and their human flaws, while also feeling a familiarity with the themes of loss, avoiding the repetition of history, and reconciliation.
